Issue 1: Drifters

The inaugural issue of CRAFT DESERT : Drifters features interviews with scott b. davis, and Marina Elenskaya/Sarah Mesritz of Current Obsession. Our first guest writer is artist and Director of the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, Paul Sacaridiz.

Scott b. davis is a photographer and platinum printer – whose hand-built cameras and meticulous processes capture stunning images of the ‘unremarkable wilderness’ of Southern California. Adam John Manley’s interview with davis explores scott’s connection to the desert, his need to hand built his cameras, and the photograph as both image and object.

Marina Elenskaya and Sarah Mesritz are the co-founders and publishers of Current Obsession – a Netherlands based contemporary jewelry magazine that marries design and fashion strategies to present a fresh look at the practices of contemporary jewelry artists.  Kerianne Quick’s piece ‘No Pressure, No Diamonds’ thinks about the magazine as a coveted collectible object, contamination as innovation, and compares Borgesian compression to magazine publishing.

Paul’s beautiful piece ‘thinking about one thing while looking at another” muses on the theme of CRAFT DESERT Issue 1, and the object as portal.

As residents at the 2018 Haystack Open Studio Residency CRAFT DESERT co-founders Adam John Manley and Kerianne Quick edited, completed the layouts, printed, and coil bound the first run (28) of the edition of 100.
